Buck Clayton was Count Basie's star trumpeter in the 1930s and went on to be a fine bandleader and arranger in his own right. In the 1980's Alyn Shipton published Buck's life story. In return, shortly before his death in 1991, the trumpeter gave him a collection of original compositions that had never been recorded, with the request to keep the music alive after his death. As a result Alyn and Matthais Seuffert founded a band to play what was, in a very literal sense, Buck's legacy, and Matthais pulled together arrangements for a nine-piece band from Buck's dusty manuscripts. It was originally launched at the Ascona Festival in 2004, where it was hailed by critic Brian Harvey as 'superb, crisp and exciting mainstream jazz with wonderful solos'. The band was reformed for a successful UK tour in 2011 and for this tour in 2012 half the concert will feature Buck's arrangements and half the concert will feature Gwyneth Herbert with the band with songs from the Peggy Lee Songbook. A one-off top class concert not to be missed.
